Vienna, Austria / Harelbeke, Belgium, January 21, 2025
Borealis, a leading provider of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions, has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Aspiravi, a prominent Belgian renewable energy producer: Aspiravi will supply Borealis with 120 GWh of renewable energy annually from 20 onshore wind turbines located across eight wind parks in Belgium, starting in 2026. This renewable energy will be used to power Borealis' operations in Belgium, reducing the company's Scope 2 emissions by approximately 54,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.
"We are delighted to partner with Aspiravi to secure a reliable and sustainable energy supply for our operations. By focusing on local energy sourcing, we are contributing to the creation of value in Belgium, fostering economic growth, and supporting sustainable development in the region. This agreement brings us closer to our goal of sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and is a testament to how we reinvent essentials for sustainable living," comments Wolfram Krenn, Borealis Executive Vice President Base Chemicals and Operations.
"Aspiravi is proud to welcome Borealis as a partner in the energy transition through this long-term agreement. As a pioneer in renewable energy solutions in Belgium, Aspiravi is ready to support Borealis in achieving its decarbonization goals and sustainability ambitions. What’s more, the energy for this project is sourced and utilized entirely within Belgium. This partnership with Borealis will not only strengthen the Belgian energy landscape, it also contributes directly to the climate goals of Borealis and of Belgium,” says Bernard Steverlynck, CEO Aspiravi Onshore.
