Cost competitiveness and efficiency are two key drivers for rigid packaging applications. Material solutions should enable high line speeds with excellent processability whilst reducing material consumption through thin film coatings thereby supporting both sustainability and cost competitiveness. For applications such as food cartons, trays and sleeves, specific functional coating characteristics such as excellent sealing properties, resistance to grease, abrasion and heat are essential. Other specialty applications such as photo paper require smooth, flat surfaces and good printability. Finally, improving sustainability is an industry-wide trend aimed at offering more environmentally-friendly board and paper coatings.
Our technology supports a broad range of low density polyethylene (LDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene-based (PP) applications in the manufacture of extrusion coating products.
An LDPE produced on a high-pressure tubular reactor, CT7200 is a Borealis solution developed for extrusion coating products that will help the industry address the issue of the pending closure of autoclave plants. Our new high pressure tubular platform enables us to secure supply for the global extrusion coating market in full compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. CT7200 shares the high-quality organoleptics of currently available materials yet has numerous other advantages:
CT7200 is ideally suited for applications involving high-volume extrusion coating of boards and papers, liquid packaging, extrusion coating and lamination of different substrates and co-extrusion in multi-structures.
Our HDPE grades offer the following property improvements compared to LDPE:
Our specialty PP grades feature:
As a leading supplier of superior polyolefin plastics for advanced packaging and fibre solutions for over 50 years, we understand the economics and challenges behind rigid packaging applications. Our knowledge not only covers the coating aspect, but also includes other technologies such as moulding and producing pouches. This application expertise and broad product mix enable us to develop the right solutions to address our customers' specific needs. Our own pilot line allows us to develop and screen new technical solutions in cooperation with our partners for less testing rounds and economic downtime. Furthermore our integrated solutions fulfil all relevant food, chemical and/or regulatory requirements.
