Packaging

Reduce – Reuse – Recycle is the future of packaging applications and is provided by our polyolefin foams. First, our foams offer the lowest carbon footprint by reducing the amount of packaging, while still ensuring food and goods reach consumers in the best possible condition. They are then able to fit within reuse systems as well as existing recycling streams, and are suitable for use in valuable second-life applications and recycled content, thereby closing the loop.

Our innovative foam solutions also answer the concerns of consumers, who are increasingly worried by the impact of non-circular packaging. They offer a viable alternative while providing you with low-cost, high-performance and sustainable packaging for the circular economy.

Sports

Reducing the weight of sports parts is essential in improving performance and energy spent, while keeping safety first. Our portfolio of foams includes the Queo range of plastomers and elastomers, which improves impact resistance, flexibility, and resilience, especially at low temperatures. This allows you to create parts that push the limits of your end consumer including insoles, cushion mats, padding, yoga rollers, and helmets.

Transport

The European Union is pushing for stricter CO2 emission regulations by the end of the next decade. To reduce fuel consumption, vehicle engineers and designers must now consider replacing traditional, heavy-metal automotive components with lightweight materials.

Our latest foam solutions for interior, exterior, and under-the-bonnet parts, offer greater lightweighting potential while reducing noise and offering high comfortability. They also enable you to produce parts with better foamability, high dimensional stability, minimised sink marks, and full performance, while remaining totally sustainable at end-of-life.

Construction

Our polyolefin foams have been used for sealing and thermal insulation, both commercially and domestically, thanks to their lightweight, hydrophobic and durable properties. With a growing demand for insulation and energy savings, and as society becomes more concerned with lowering CO2 emissions and recyclability, the use of polyolefin foams to support sustainable systems is increasing.

The flexibility and lightweight nature of the foams allows easy-to-install solutions, and also provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. Due to their strong commercial and sustainability benefits, they are being used in applications including flooring underlay, pipe insulation, composite panels, solar floating docks, ground plates for artificial turf, and office wall separators.

Borealis LDPE

Low density polyethylene (LDPE) foam production by extrusion process, without crosslinking, requires the use of a branched polymer. Branched polyethylene materials are produced by tubular and autoclave process.

Borealis EVA

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is a random copolymer of ethylene with various amounts of vinyl acetate (VA). With increased VA content, crystallinity decreases until around 50% of the EVA is amorphous. Excellent flexibility, softness and toughness at low temperatures also make it a good choice for foam materials.

Queo™

Queo™ (Plastomers/Elastomers) is a polyethylene copolymer much softer than LDPE that, because of very low crystallinity, can be foamed in both non-cross linked and in cross-lined form. The low modulus and low glass transition temperature of Queo makes it an interesting candidate for softer PO foams, as a blending partner for LDPE, HDPE, and LLDPE, and PP foam to reduce stiffness and increase impact strength.

Borealis PP

Polypropylene (PP) is used in the foam injection moulding process in a variety of industries. PP foam unlocks the full lightweighting potential for foamed parts that also exhibit good mechanics, high purity, and excellent surface aesthetics across a range of foaming degrees. Depending on part design and applied foaming process parameters, weight savings of 5% – 15%, and more, can be achieved with this technology.

Borealis HMS PP

Daploy ™ Conventional polypropylene (PP) is a linear polymer that is difficult to foam in the extrusion process, due to a lack of melt strength and a limited extensibility of the melt. Daploy™ WB140HMS is a long chain-branched PP polymer developed PP foam extrusion process. Unlike conventional PP, Daploy™ WB140HMS offers a combination of high melt strength and low melt viscosity due to shear thinning effect caused by the branched structure. This is also the case when the grade is combined with other polyolefin materials. Blending with outer polyolefin grades enables you to adjust stiffness, impact and cost in line with your requirements.
